What inspired you to become a tattoo artist?
Tattooing as an art medium is unique by itself. The thought of etching designs, memories or a mark on skin permanently is what inspired me to be a tattoo artist. Imagine an individual carrying your work for a lifetime by itself is a high for any artist. I always did and always believed it was a true art form. It seems it took a long time for society to see that, but times are changing and tattooing seems to have gained lots of positive attention from the public. It’s about time!
Have you ever taken formal art training from a younger age or are you self-taught?
I have always been indulging myself into learning new mediums of art since I was a kid. I realised this early and even applied at a few colleges but the fees were absurd and definitely not affordable for me that’s why I ended up joining a regular college and pursue B.com but in time I knew that is not what I wanted to do in the first place. Tattooing as a career then was a rebellious choice I took but look where it has taken me. Being self-taught and going through the struggles of life only makes you a better human being and I’m proud of it.
How do you console a person who is experiencing pain while drawing a tattoo?
We definitely ask them to suck it up. But if that isn’t working we tape them up to the chair! Lol. On a serious note getting a tattoo does hurt but it’s one of those times where you really get a chance to test the pain threshold of your body. It’s been proven as well! There are techniques related to skin and skill that we develop over the years and advancement in equipment has helped us reduce the pain as well. The number one factor why people fear getting tattooed is the noise of the machine but surprise surprise! there are now silent machines as well!
What do you feel was one of your biggest struggles as a tattoo artist?
Tattooing back then was considered to be a bold choice. No one knew if it could support me financially or anything related to it especially my parents and loved ones who always cared about my future so I had to be ready with standard answers. When you’re flooded with questions like that, it was only difficult to keep me motivated to go through the storm! My parents are very proud of me today!
When did you finally decide to enter this profession?
I pursued tattooing in 2005 but it was only in 2008 when things really got serious under the guidance of my mentor Sameer Patange from Kraayonz tattoo studios who taught me everything. He taught me to live life to the fullest and yet never to forget my roots. I can never forget what he has done for me.
